Fund Cancer Awareness and Prevention Education

Help fund cancer education for firefighters.

Over the course of our first year as a foundation, we have learned a lot about the challenges facing our firefighters. Some of the most startling statistics are those related to cancer diagnoses.

Firefighter cancer statistics are far worse than we knew. Cancer is a leading cause of death for America’s firefighters. Cancer caused 60% of line-of-duty deaths for career firefighters between 2002-2014, according to International Association of Fire Fighters data.

For Boston Firefighters the statistics are even more startling: 67 % of their line-of-duty deaths were caused by cancer during the same period.

Firefighters are 2 ½ to 3-times more likely as the average person to be diagnosed with cancer. Not only are firefighters more likely to be diagnosed once, but they also have a statistically significant higher risk for multiple cancers than the general public. Firefighters have increased risk for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma among others.

In 2016, Last Call Foundation is battling occupational cancer with the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, , the nonprofit Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN), Michael Hamrock, MD and Firefighter Russell Osgood. Together we will bring FCSN’s extensive cancer-prevention training and Dr. Hamrock’s cancer-screening recommendations, recently implemented by the Boston Fire Department, to every firefighter in Massachusetts. We are dedicated to helping firefighters protect their own health, save them selves and their families from the devastating effects of a cancer diagnosis.
